Tikkurila stain and lacquer products in key role in the renovation of Palace Restaurant’s wood surfaces

The ceiling panels and movable partition walls in the famous Palace restaurant at Eteläranta 10 in Helsinki were treated, respecting their cultural history value, with Tikkurila’s Dicco Color, Uvinol and Merit Blond products to give a durable and beautiful finish.

The traditional Palace Restaurant was reopened after the renovation in November 2017. Royal Restaurants, which runs Palace, underlines the restaurant’s role as one of Finland’s gastronomic flagships. The restaurant, designed by Viljo Revell and Keijo Petäjä, set tight requirements for the design. The natural wood surfaces play a key role in the restaurant’s interior, now displaying the expertise of the suppliers of the wall and ceiling panels, Tikkurila’s expertise in wood treatment.

“This is a classic restaurant in a protected building that was updated in terms of functionality, building services engineering and fire safety for modern restaurant use,” says architect Erkki Ölander of SARC Architects, adding that “the greatest challenge was the ceiling to which several functional requirements applied. On the whole we tried to change as little as possible of the original feeling but nevertheless modernizing the cooling, ventilation, lighting and surfaces to meet modern needs. The best functional solution was achieved by making models, using several stain color models and through flexible implementation stage cooperation.”

The dining room’s wood ceiling, spanning almost a thousand square meters, was made by Puucomp. The ceiling panels were stained with Dicco Color, then treated with Uvinol Sealer HB primer and Uvinol Clear 10 top lacquer. The product chosen for the movable walls was Merit Blond 10, because the requirement was a matt lacquer that will not turn yellow with time.

“Our product range is so wide that, if necessary, we can tailor a required product,” says Mika Peltola, a key account manager at Tikkurila. “Dicco Color is the most popular solvent-borne stain in Finland. Speed and even quality of surfaces were important in this project that was completed under a tight schedule. And the fact that Uvinol lacquers do not give off formaldehyde is an important environmental benefit. The number 10 after the top lacquer name means that the product’s gloss grade is low. The completed ceiling is not glossy and will not reflect, and the color tones correspond to the architectural requirements. The reason for success in this project lies in our long-term expertise in the surface treatment of wood products.”

“There was no off-the-shelf product for this job,” says Puucomp’s Managing Director Kari Hallman. “We had to come up with a solution, the fire technical properties of which met with the modern construction requirements, but still making it look like the original 1950s color. The veneer ceiling boards with the required fire resistance is in principle an off-the-shelf product, but its technical decorative veneer was tailor-made for this ceiling. Part of Tikkurila’s solution for this project was to create a special stain.”

“We have been making our movable partition walls for 45 years,” says Kurikan Interiööri’s Managing Director Mikko Tuohisto-Kokko. “All the walls were changed in the renovation. We received a sample of an elm-veneered element complete with surface treatment, and were requested to deliver an equivalent product within a short period. It was important for the client, Teollisuuskeskus Oy, that the wall surface color may not change over time. We decided to use Merit Blond top lacquer, which does not fade. Because veneer is always individual, we first treated with Uvinol primer to even out the shade.”

Merit Blond and Uvinol are part of special product offering for wood finishes.
